02/05/08 Upper Thames Scullers win at Abingdon Head and Birmingham Regatta In winning Elite sculls at the Abingdon Head of the River on Sunday 20th April, Upper Thames Rowing Club’s captain Will Hoodless was the fastest sculler in the event, beating many pairs, doubles and fours. He sculled over the 2000 metre course upstream from Culham Lock in a time of 8 min 14 sec. Mike Broom of Upper Thames also did well to come second in novice sculls in the same event.
Birmingham Regatta He went one better on Saturday 26th April at Birmingham Regatta when he won novice sculls on Edgbaston Reservoir. The seven entries for novice sculls were split into two divisions. The winner of each division raced over a 700 metre two-lane sprint course reduced to 650 metres because the reservoir is still not full despite a winter of rain. He won all three races (heat, semi-final and final) convincingly, the final by more than three lengths. Both Will and Mike will be competing at Wallingford Regatta and Marlow
Spring Regatta on 4th and 5th May respectively.
