UTRC juniors bring home six medals from Pangbourne Junior Sculls

Meanwhile the Upper Thames junior squad was out in force at the Pangbourne Junior Sculls also held on Saturday 11th November. The course runs over 3000 metres at Beale Park, reduced to 1750 metres for the under-13s. Medals were awarded for the first three placings in the single sculls in the morning division but in the afternoon the crew boats were awarded only golds for the winners.

First win of the day in the Junior Men’s 10 (years old) event went to Upper Thames’s Jamie Motttram in his first ever race, while his older brother Sam won the Junior Men’s 12 single sculls beating ten other opponents.

Jo Unsworth’s was the only entry in Junior Women’s 12 single sculls so the challenge she set herself was to beat all the Junior 12 boys who started ahead of her as well as all the J 13 girls. She triumphed beating all the boys and all but one of the J 13 girls so although technically her class (JW 12) had only one entry she was awarded a gold medal anyway.

The fourth Upper Thames medal came when Emma Wirt took bronze in the JW 14 single sculls, while in the JW 15 section Upper Thames took second (silver), third (bronze) and fourth places with Hannah Shimmin, Katherine Poulter and Emma-Jane Girling respectively.
