Inspired by the wins at Henley in July, the Senior Squad began training in earnest again on 30th August after a seven week break.
It is pleasing to welcome a number of new faces to the group, both men and women, as well as having most of last year’s squad return. A few HRR winners understandably have decided to hang up their shorts after achieving their long-held goal but the hope is that they will continue to play an important part in the club’s future, acting as the embodiment of what can be achieved with a little effort and the right attitude and providing support.
The challenge is to build a durable legacy that lasts longer than one summer, and those who return do so with that thought firmly in mind. In the last five years the number of athletes who have represented the UTRC Senior Squad has grown exponentially compared to the five years before, and this is one indication that Upper Thames is regarded as a place for ambitious athletes to achieve their goals.
The first race to which a laden trailer will be heading is the Wallingford Long Distance Sculls on September 26th.
