The women's squad is open to rowers of all ages and abilities. We are a friendly group of dedicated rowers with access to an excellent fleet of boats, a fully equipped gym, ergo room, superb club and changing facilities, and experienced coaching.
The aim of the women's squad is to win at high-level regattas such as Henley Royal and Henley Women's Regatta. The coaching
team creates a structured and supportive environment to help the women's rowers achieve wins at the major head races during
the autumn & winter and regattas during the spring & summer.
The coaching team is currently Ali Gill and Jonathan Langlands:
Jonathan Langlands - Jonathan started coaching at UTRC in October 2009 having previously spent 4 years coaching at Thames Rowing Club, Putney, London. He has coached a wide range of skill groups, from crews representing Putney High School, to helping Miles Forbes-Thomas with the Syndey Olympic womens VIII. He has also taken a completely novice crew from never having been in a boat to achieving third place in the Novice category at the Womens Head of the River, in just 7 months. He is currently coaching the intermediate womens crews at Upper Thames.
Training in the winter months is generally a mixture of ergos, circuits and weights during the week and rowing at weekends. Outings on weekends start at 7.30am and we aim to finish before midday. As daylight increases more water sessions are arranged, depending on squad availability, between Monday and Friday.
During the autumn & winter months water sessions involve time in sculling and sweep boats to improve boat moving skills, crew adhesion and confidence on the water. Fours and Eights are brought together for head racing with the primary goals being the Fours Head of the River and the Women's Eights Head of the River.
The spring & summer months start with a training camp where crews are formed for specific events at up-coming regattas. These crews and events are identified depending on the strengths and ambitions of the rowers. Crew formation is underpinned by an open, competitive and professional approach which includes discussion with the rowers involved.
The women's squad also includes an Intermediate group and a Veteran group. One of the club's many strengths is a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, and this atmosphere is inclusive to rowers who have various amounts of time available for rowing and training, and who have various levels of rowing experience. If high-level racing is not for you, but you would like to do as much training, rowing and racing as your schedule allows, there are crews that enjoy their rowing and training in the Intermediate and Veteran groups.
New rowers are always welcome. The women's squad aims to develop an individual's confidence and technical ability both in sculling and in sweep rowing. We have a structure, the equipment and professional environment designed to support those rowers whose ambitions are to achieve success at the highest national and international level, as well as rowers who would like to do as much rowing as they can. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to know more, or have ambitions to join the group. We look forward to hearing from you. |
