The New Clubhouse

Clubhouse, Boathouse and Facilities

The original clubhouse at Upper Thames was built in 1985 and it still stands today. The timber framed building provides a cosy setting for our main club room. During the summer the large doors open onto a balcony at ground level leading to the club lawn and down to the river.

By 2005 the club had expanded to the point where a new boathouse was required, replacing the old regatta boom shed which housed all club boats up until that time. This was opened by London Mayor Boris Johnson, then the MP for Henley, and now has enough space to house 6 eights, 24 fours and 21 pairs. The boat fleet is well maintained by a professional boatman.

More recently new facilities have been added to our clubhouse, which were opened by Sir Steve Redgrave in 2009. The old sculling shed was replaced with a new boathouse for members' private boats, and upstairs has since become a first class gymnasium. There is plenty of space for circuit training as well as for free and fixed weights. There is no other gymnasium quite like it in club rowing as it overlooks the famous Henley Royal Regatta course

During the summer this room is transformed into a fantastic club room and bar where members and their guests can relax and enjoy the racing at the three famous regattas which take place on the Henley Reach each year, namely Henley Women's Regatta, The Henley Masters Regatta and, of course, HRR itself. This room is available for rent to non-members through the lettings manager, particularly during the off-season in July and August, and features a large first floor balcony with a great view of the river.

The women's changing rooms were also moved upstairs in 2009, and now benefit from state of the art under floor heating. There are plans to upgrade the men's changing rooms. On the first floor there is a meeting room and office which can be used to provide lay-up facilities in support of occasional catering upstairs.

Downstairs there is a dedicated ergo room, which accommodates 16 ergos. The walls are mirrored and the large fans ensure good air flow. All in all, the training facilities at UTRC are of a very high standard.

The kitchen and club room remain as before, along with a bar for more regular use. The club holds a number of key social events each year ranging from club suppers and rowing events to Fireworks Night, averaging about one event each month throughout the year.

We are always keen to extend the hand of friendship to the many guests from around the world who visit us every year. Due to our unique location on the regatta course at Henley, UTRC really is at the heart of the rowing world.
